Neck & Shoulder Pain
Comprehensive Neck Pain Relief
Effective care for acute, chronic, localized, and radiating neck pain.
Neck pain is common—whether caused by an injury, stress, poor posture, or sleeping awkwardly, it can be debilitating. Our experienced acupuncturists provide immediate relief and treat all types of neck pain. Treatment may involve acupuncture points in the neck as well as throughout the body to address underlying imbalances. Each session includes a thorough assessment of your range of motion, triggers, tongue, pulse, and palpation of the affected area.
Western Medical Perspective
Neck pain can stem from muscle or ligament injuries, disc or joint issues, nerve compression, aging, osteoarthritis, overuse, poor posture, or other health conditions. Common Western treatments focus on reducing pain and improving mobility through NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, physical therapy, massage, chiropractic care, steroid injections, and acupuncture.
Acupuncture Perspective
In Chinese medicine, neck pain arises from stagnation in specific meridians, such as the Urinary Bladder, Gallbladder, or Small Intestine meridians.
-
Urinary Bladder meridian: Pain at the back of the neck, sometimes extending down the back.
-
Small Intestine meridian: Pain along the neck and shoulders.
-
Gallbladder meridian: Pain at the base of the skull and sides of the neck, affecting head rotation.
Acupuncture may target points on the neck or at distal locations, such as the wrists, ankles, arms, and legs, to restore qi flow and relieve pain. Techniques may include:
-
Jing River points: Near wrists or ankles, effective in moving qi.
-
Jing Well points: Fingertips and toes, used for radiating pain.
-
Distal treatments: Tight neck muscles often respond to releasing tight calves or Achilles tendons.
Underlying imbalances—like qi deficiency, stress, or anxiety—are also addressed for long-lasting relief.
Additional Techniques
-
Electroacupuncture (Estim): Relaxes muscles, reduces spasms, and triggers natural pain-relieving neurotransmitters.
-
Cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, manual release: Enhance treatment effectiveness and speed recovery.
