Acupuncture for Seasonal Allergies

Seasonal allergies are extremely common and can cause frustrating symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and more. These symptoms may flare up at different times of the year but often follow predictable seasonal patterns. Whether you’re currently experiencing symptoms or want to prevent them before they start, our skilled acupuncturists can help.

During an active allergy episode, we assess your symptoms to create a targeted treatment plan. This may include acupuncture, gua sha, cupping, and/or Chinese herbal medicine. For prevention, we explore your typical allergy patterns, seasonal triggers, and overall constitution to design a proactive strategy that minimizes flare-ups.

Understanding Allergies

From a Western medicine perspective, seasonal allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to harmless substances like pollen or mold. Symptoms may include nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy or red eyes, postnasal drip, headaches, and sometimes wheezing. Treatments typically involve avoiding allergens, nasal sprays, antihistamines, or other medications.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), treatment is personalized based on your unique symptoms and constitution:

  • Eye-related symptoms (redness, itchiness, watery eyes) are often treated along the Gallbladder and San Jiao meridians, which run through the head, eyes, and ears. These symptoms often indicate Heat patterns that flare seasonally, particularly in Spring, associated with Shao Yang disharmony. Other signs may include alternating hot and cold sensations, headaches, or a bitter taste in the mouth. Acupuncture helps clear excess heat and restore balance.

  • Nasal symptoms (runny nose, postnasal drip) focus on the Lung meridian, which governs the nose, along with points on the Spleen meridian to enhance respiratory strength and mucus clearance.

  • Severe nasal congestion or sinus blockages may involve restoring Qi flow between the Large Intestine and Stomach meridians, which can relieve sinus pressure and congestion effectively.

Most patients experience symptom relief after their first session. Treatment may also include cupping, gua sha, or personalized herbal formulas to enhance results.

Preventing Seasonal Allergies

Prevention is a core focus of TCM. By strengthening the Wei Qi (Defensive Qi)—the body’s natural immune shield—before allergy season begins, we can help minimize or even prevent symptoms. Ideally, preventative treatment starts about one month before your typical allergy season. Sharing your usual symptoms and the timing of flare-ups allows our practitioners to design a plan that supports both immune function and overall health.
