Acupuncture for Smoking Cessation

Quitting smoking is one of life’s toughest challenges. While there’s no single solution that works for everyone, acupuncture can be a highly effective tool to help curb cravings and ease common withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, headaches, fatigue, and restlessness. By targeting specific acupuncture points in the ears and throughout the body, this approach supports both physical and emotional balance during your journey.

It’s important to note: acupuncture won’t make the decision for you. The choice to quit must come from within—but once you’ve committed, acupuncture can strengthen your resolve, keep you on track, and make the process more manageable.

Ear Acupuncture, NADA Protocol, and Ear Seeds

Auricular (ear) acupuncture is particularly effective for smoking cessation. In the 1970s, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) developed a five-point ear protocol to support addiction recovery and detoxification. Since then, it has been widely used for nicotine withdrawal, substance abuse, and emotional trauma.

The five key points include:

  • Sympathetic: Calms the nervous system and eases pain.

  • Shen Men (Spirit Gate): Promotes mental and emotional calm and enhances the effect of other points.

  • Kidney: Supports willpower, grounding, and reduces fear.

  • Liver: Aids detoxification and reduces irritability.

  • Lung: Supports detoxification and strengthens lung function.

These points can be stimulated with either fine acupuncture needles or ear seeds, small seeds taped to the ear that provide continuous acupressure. Patients can press on the seeds throughout the day to boost their effect.

Body Acupuncture and the Tim Mee Point

In addition to the ears, acupuncture points on the body are selected to activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the body’s “rest and digest” mode—which promotes calmness, reduces stress, and helps regulate internal organs.

Acupuncture also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals, which can improve mood and reduce withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, and fatigue. Your acupuncturist will tailor your treatment to your specific needs.

One notable point, Tim Mee, located near the wrist, can even alter the way cigarettes taste, making them less appealing and supporting your commitment to quit.

Take Your Next Step

While acupuncture can’t make you quit, it is a powerful ally in your journey. By addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of nicotine withdrawal, it helps reduce discomfort and stress, which are common triggers for relapse. Your personalized treatment may include a combination of ear and body acupuncture, with ear seeds to continue stimulation at home between sessions.

If you’re ready to quit, we’re here to support you—naturally, safely, and effectively.
