Infertility – Can Acupuncture Help?

Struggling with infertility is something one of every eight couples in the United States copes with on a daily basis. Many people have to turn to methods that can be invasive and even dangerous for a woman, including surgery, fertility drugs, and even in-vitro fertilization or using donor eggs – many fail to realize that acupuncture is a safe, less expensive and non-invasive way to help with natural contraception. Couples who use acupuncture as a method to boost fertility combined with Western fertility methods are found to have a 26% increase in successful, natural contraception.

Infertility issues are found to be from factors in men as well as women; about 39% of factors are connected to women, and 33% of factors are connected to men. A large part of infertility in both of these groups is hormone imbalances, which are caused by stress. For women, stress can prevent ovulation and throw hormone levels necessary for contraception off. Acupuncture can help release endorphins in the body, which help reduce pain and stress. In a study conducted in 2009, researchers studied 57 infertile women who were undergoing IVF or a combination of IVF and ICSI, and added regular acupuncture into their routine as well. The study showed that with stimulating the right puncture points in the body, women part of the acupuncture group achieved a pregnancy rate of 64.7%, while the control group achieved pregnancy rates of only 42.5%. For men, studies have concluded that five weeks of acupuncture treatment increased the number of normal sperm and reduced abnormalities in the structure of abnormal sperm.

In females, another cause of infertility that acupuncture aids is lack of blood flow to their reproductive systems and organs. Sometimes, infertility can be caused by a weak uterine lining; this is because there is not enough blood flowing to the uterus. Acupuncture can help facilitate flow of blood to the endometrium, which creates a thick, rich lining. It can also improve follicular and ovarian function while an egg is being implanted. The combination of increased blood flow to reproductive organs and balancing of the endocrine system that acupuncture can facilitate in women can greatly improve chances of having a safe, natural contraception, and can reduce the chance of having a miscarriage during a pregnancy as well.
